Aural textures combined with spoken word always make for a fascinating listening experience, if for no other reason than the lyrical message. But on Strange Recital, Lauré Lussier takes these spoken words and twists, mutates, and spins them until the become a texture all themselves. Haunting bits of poetry fill the ether with all kinds of haunting auras while being accompanied by more classical elements. The opener of this short(ish) album "Vieux Piano" starts this off with a gentle bit of keys that almost immediately lead into pitch-shifted and gently distorted vocals of two voices reading out the same poem.

Laure Lussier is a composer and author from Quebec and Strange Symphony is the latest in a string of releases via Adventurous Music. It follows Strange Recital, a suite of pieces based around the work of Canadian poet Emile Nelligan which fluctuate between emotive instrumental vignettes and unsettling backward growling vocals. While the creepy vocals are absent here, the mixture is no less odd. “1st Movement - Allegro Ma Non Troppo"combines trills of synthetic horn and clumps of agitated birdsong with volleys of dissenting percussive rumble. It registers somewhere between the fluttering bombast of Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring and Eduard Artemyev’s score for Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker, moments of playfulness winded by the sharp elbows of melodic unease. On “3rd Movement - Moderate”, the swift changes in mood register like the cut scenes of a video game or the vivid and idiosyncratic soundtracks of Barrington Pheloung. A strange but very compelling symphony indeed.
